Kids Grieve Too!
Robert Kastenbaum (1972) suggested that we think of childhood as “the kingdom where nobody dies.” Unfortunately, as much as we would like to think that we can protect children from death and loss, in reality we cannot. Instead, we must concentrate on how to prepare and support children and teens as they cope with loss. |
Kids Grieve Too! is an educational and emotional support group for youth who have experienced death within the past year. Divided into appropriate age groups, the program is designed to help children and teens understand their grief and provide a safe arena for them to learn how to cope with their loss. Four group sessions employ different forms of expression such as writing, music, talking or drawing to help children express their feelings.
“Kids in the program are particularly interested in what other children have to say. It seems to validate their own feelings,” states Life’s Doors program director. “We utilize a variety of self-expression tools to help unlock their feelings and reduce the fears that accompany those feelings.”
